Some of the common health problems found in Chihuahuas along with their solutions.
See Symptoms and Treatments Below -
Hypoglycemia or Low Blood Sugar Chihuahuas up to 3 months of age are prone to this and usually grow out of it. Sometimes it may be a lifelong condition. Symptoms: Shakiness,Diluted pupils,Staggering A glassy, dazed look. Can lead to: seizures, coma death. Treatment: Keep the blood sugar levels even by feeding high quality food in smaller portions throughout the day or free feed. If an attack occurs, put a bit of Karo syrup or sugar or a commercially prepared glucose supplement on the dog's gums and tongue. Get to a Veterinarian immediately. Luxating Patella "Loose knee" or "Trick Knee" - the rear leg knee joint is very loose and may dislocate on occasion. A dog with a mild case of Patella Luxation can lead a normal life. A severe case may need surgery. Tracheal Collapse * * * Windpipe collapses and makes it difficult for the dog to breathe - Chis 5 years and older are most prone to this. Symptoms: Sudden outbursts of coughing Shortness of breath Gagging while eating or drinking Treatment: Medicines prescibed by a Vet will treat 70% of the cases successfully. Stubborn cases may need surgery. * * * Tracheal Collapse is NOT to be confused with Reverse Sneezing: Reverse Sneezing is normal but somewhat distressing when you experience your dog doing this for the first time. Read about it here: www.petplace.com/dogs/reverse-sneezingen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_sneezing www.petplace.com/dogs/reverse-sneezing-in-dogs/page1.aspx en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_sneezing Or do any "Google Search"for "Reverse Sneezing in Dogs or Chihuahuas". Obesity If overweight feed a special reduced fat dog food. Exercise your dog with daily walks - do not carry him everywhere! Obesity can lead to an early death, joint injuries and tracheal collapse. Molera - Open Spot on the Skull Soft spot or open spot on the skull - Chihuahuas are the only breed of dog to be born with an incomplete skull. The molera does fill in with age, but great care needs to be taken during the first six months until the skull is fully formed. Official Molera statement issued by the Chihuahua Club of America : "Official Molera Statement" Provides an explanation and pictures. Hydrocephalus - Not to be confused with Molera Many veterinarians are not familiar with Chihuahuas as a breed, and mistakenly confuse a molera with hydrocephalus. Read the statement above regarding this often deadly mis-diagnosis. Broken Bones and Injuries Please prevent rough treatment by children and prevent falls and jumping from tall heights! The Chihuahua is not fragile but it is a little dog and needs to be protected. It may be squashed easily. It doesn't know it is little and will "stand up" to dogs 10 times it's size! Shaking (Normal for Chihuahuas - Sometimes referred to as "The Chihuahua Shake") Not to be confused with Hypoglycemia. Nervousness can make a dog shiver or appear to shake, as if it is cold. However, the Chihuahua is a very small dog, making it even more nervous than most, plus, because of its small size, it does get cold much faster. This would explain the Chihuahuas burrowing nature. It likes to stay under some soft cover. Excess Plaque Build Up on Teeth Brush your dog's teeth 2-3 times a week. Provide teeth cleaning treats for your Chihuahua to chew on such as Nylabones and/or edible teeth cleaning treats. Feed dry food as a base food. Have teeth cleaned yearly if there's a problem. Older Chihuahuas are especially prone to this. |
